To my boys,
You won’t remember what it felt like when I first held you in my arms…
Or how I rocked you in the wee hours of the morning as you cried and cried.
Or the things that Daddy did to make you giggle those insanely funny baby giggles.
You won’t be able to tell me what your first words were…
Or what it felt like to walk to me as you took your first steps.
Or that you loved gazing at the trees while we hiked.
You won’t know what books made you laugh…
Or which foods you liked to toss to our dog.
Or how comforted you were when I kissed your boo boos.
You won’t remember.
But hopefully you’ll feel it deep down.
Love.
Comfort.
Contentment.
And that will stay with you as begin to make memories that WILL stick with you.
You won’t remember these early, early years.
But I will.
And that’s why I take pictures.
I scribble down the things you do and say.
Because one day you’ll want to see.
And I’ll show you.
This is so very beautiful!
Really lovely & so well written
I won’t bore you with all the reasons I needed to read this today, but just know that I did and it really touched me.
I’m so glad it touched you when you needed it. That’s what I love about blogging. š
Love this! Just beautiful.
Oh this is so perfect- and so so true. Now I need to go love on my kids!
Time passes so quickly. I am so glad I have the blog to remind me of the things JDaniel has gone. Wonderful piece!
Me too! I scrapbook but I seem to be blogging more lately than scrapbooking. I really love taking note of the little details.
Very sweet post!
My younger one and the dog have a special connection. Since the day she was born, they did, and the dog and my oldest do NOT get along.
I have these adorable photos from when maddie was just crawling, and she’d make her way over to Jack, and lay her head on his furry body. š
Aww that’s so sweet. I love how our dog (a yellow lab) acts with the kids. They pummel him and he’s so chill about it. Gotta love mellow labs.
Oh no – I now have tears streaming down my face! This was just perfect timing for me to read this today, so for that I thank you š
Glad it was good timing. I’ve read a post like that before, where the timing was just right. That’s one reason blogging rules!
awww how sweet. What a lovely post.
I like to tell my children about when they were babies. They just seem to lap it up.
Boy did this pull on my heart strings when I read this! my little guy is about to turn a year old in less than two weeks, so it was very well-timed. š Wow, don’t they grow up fast!
I know it! I know everyone says “they grow up so fast” but really, it’s true!
Oh Melissa, I really love this! It should really be engraved on a plaque or something. Just beautiful!
Had to come back to let you know that I stumbled this.
You’re too sweet! And I noticed a tick in traffic from SU yesterday. THANK YOU!
Absolutely touching!
Absolutely touching! I loved this so much!
This is such a beautiful, but truthful post! They won’t remember any of those things, but we will!
Aww…I love this Melissa. These moments are so precious to us as moms and yet, we realize our children won’t necessarily remember them. I love how you point out though that they will feel it. They will feel loved, protected, and safe. That feeling will last with them forever.
Beautiful post.
Beautiful Mel. I felt the same way 32 years ago. And just reading your words made all those feelings come flooding back into my heart. Thanks.
You’re welcome. Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh Mel, this is amazing. Damn pregnancy hormones made me well up (I’m blaming the allergies!) What a lovely post. I’m giving A extra love and hugs these next few weeks — even though he won’t remember.
Good lord, woman, I’m sobbing!
Lovely, just lovely.
That was a sincere lovely, not sarcastic. After I posted it, I thought it might come across wrong. I truly mean that this is a lovely post. š
LOL… I knew what you meant!
Love this! Especially since my youngest is turning 18 in a few weeks! I have been going thru pictures lately and reminiscing! Sniff, sniff!

Love, Love, Love!
Your boys will carry that feeling of security with them as they grow for sure. We recently watched old home videos of when the girls were little (because at 6 and 8 they’re SO old) and they are so much fun for everyone to watch. Capturing those moments is so important!
It IS so important! I wish we took more videos though. We do the iPhone but rarely break out our video camera. And maybe that’s fine. I just need to organize my videos since they are all over the place!
So sweet. I think about these things all the time. Your boys will be so lucky to read this when they are older. What a treasure.
you know, people write posts with letters to their kids all the time.
but this is one of my favorites that i’ve ever come across. so lovely. they are lucky to have you as a mom.
