My Black Thumb Is Now a Shade of Green

July 20, 2011 by melissa

I’ve been a sucky gardener for a long, long time. If I looked at a plant the wrong way, it’d die.

Despite this, I’ve been determined to start a vegetable garden for a couple of years now but never determined ENOUGH I guess.

Until now.

I wouldn’t call it a full-fledged “garden” but a friend gave us some plants a few months ago and it was just the push we needed.

We planted tomatoes (three varieties), two pepper plants (jalapeno and banana peppers) and two eggplants (two varieties).

And guess what?

I actually grew something, dog gone it.

Behold, my first tomato.

Big Roo got to pick that one. He was SO psyched (and yes he’s wearing his pajamas, thankyouverymuch).

Little Roo put himself in charge of the peppers. He’d been trying to pick them for weeks so I let him have a go at it.

Total? One tomato, one jalapeno and one banana pepper. (We also have another jalapenos and two more tomatoes growing.)

It may not be anything like the bounty The Barefoot Contessa gets from her garden. But for this girl, who’s thumb was once pitch black, I’ll take it.

I’ve been doing well with my cherry tomato plant. But my plant with the heirlooms? The darn squirrels keep eating them!!!

Gah, one day I’ll have to tell you about a squirrel crawling in my lap at the Grand Canyon. HATE.

We have bunnies, which funny enough haven’t messed with them yet!

Is there anything better about summer than homegrown tomatoes? (Well, maybe ice cream. But tomatoes are a close second.)

Yes! We’re definitely on the same wavelength as I describe veggie growth as thingys too. LOL.

Now corn (or cron) would be AWESOME to grow!

I can’t keep anything alive (well, besides my kids…barely) but maybe just maybe if I put on some Superman pajamas, I can break my unlucky streak with plant life?

I LOVE the idea of freshly grown produce in my own garden.
The reality? I see it as an impossibility.

Thanks for the inspiration. Who needs the Barefoot Contessa? (there’s no way her pj’s are that cool…)

Beautiful! We finally have fruit in our garden too! Just this week our tomatoes, eggplant and pumpkins have shown their faces… so nice to see after the long wait through spring! šŸ™‚

Nothing like a vegetable garden for children to learn where their food comes from. My 3 year old learned quickly not to pull the carrots too early (we’ve been unsuccessful replanting them), and it’s like an adventure each time we go harvest our goodies.

Well hiya! I'm making some design updates to this site over the next few weeks so it may look plain for now... but I'll spiff this place up soon enough!
