A Mario Brothers Halloween

November 2, 2011 by melissa

I haven’t dressed up in years.

But since Big Roo insisted on being Mario this year, I thought we’d go all out and dress up as a family (although we almost didn’t). Presenting Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Toad…

The reason we almost didn’t all dress up is because I didn’t think Daddy Roo and I could find the stuff to pull ours off. We decided we’d go to ONE Goodwill and see what we could dig up. Score! I found a pink dress and a sleeveless t-shirt to make Little Roo’s vest. Daddy Roo couldn’t find any overalls (who really wants men’s overalls anyway) so we ended up buying his. Aren’t they a cute match?

The day of our Halloween parade Little Roo did NOT want to wear his shower-cap-turned-mushroom hat. But on Halloween he was totally down with it.

And I made the little blue medallion from chipboard, paint and Diamond Glaze. The wig and gloves came from Target. I tell ya what, the “Glamour Girl” wig kept me warm outside.

My little Toad and Mario…

Capture the Everyday: Halloween Closeup

November 1, 2011 by melissa

Capture the Everyday is about getting you to capture those everyday moments in your life! Each Tuesday, I’ll issue a simple challenge to capture something that’s a part of your daily life. You can post just a picture or add some words to go along with it. You’ll have a week to get it done and then I’ll issue another. It’s a quick, easy way to start capturing those little parts of life we sometimes take for granted.

This Week’s Assignment: Halloween Closeup

You may have already seen our costumes already if you’ve seen my Twitter stream or follow me on Instagram. But I’m saving the full pictures for tomorrow! Today I’m sticking to the theme of closeups! Can you guess who we are?

I figure you’ll at least guess two of the four. In case you’re wondering, I didn’t wear a ‘stache.

I’ll tell you more about our rainy Halloween tomorrow but despite the rain, we the kids did score some candy.

Next Assignment: Something you collect

Your turn!

If you want to participate, just a few things to note:

– Grab the badge (code is in column to the right):

– Feel free to write about what you captured. A funny story about it. A history on it. How you’ll remember it. What will you want to remember about that picture 20, 30, 40 years from now?

– Just a picture and a caption are fine too.

– Don’t worry if you “aren’t a good photographer.” Consider this practice. Plus, it’s about capturing the memory, not a pretty picture.

– Visit the blogger ahead of you and as many others as you have time for.

– Leave a comment below (this notifies me through email that you linked up).

Wordful Wednesday: Turtle and a Bad Knight

November 3, 2010 by melissa

Aaaah Halloween with young boys. An excuse to dress them to your heart’s desire before they start demanding fangs, creepy costumes and lots of fake blood.

This year Little Roo donned Big Roo’s old turtle costume (because how could I let that cuteness only be witness for a total of 30 minutes like 3 years ago?)

Big Roo got a plastic sword from Grandma and only talked about being a knight from then on. So, he was a knight, although he emphatically called himself a “bad knight.” In fact, I had a hard time getting a smiling pic because he kept doing a bad knight sneer.

First… I present to you the bad knight.

The shield I made from cardboard (ok, hubby drew it and I cut it and painted it. ok, I only painted the yellow part. I DID make the handles though so naner naner.)

Giving Daddy Roo props for this one. That was one cheap, grey plastic sword until he got his hands on it. I applied some gold powder on top for a little shimmer and sealed it with Mod Podge (thanks the recommendation of Twitter peeps @2old2tap and @julialadewski).

Moving along to the turtle (who is anything but slow)…

Good God I love this costume. I mean… turtle toes? For real? CUTE.

With detachable shell…

Cuteness is magnified when you put the two together!

By the way, my friend Stacy from Kids*Stuff*World is doing a virtual Halloween costume parade this week. Go link up YOUR cute kids all dressed up!

Well hiya! I'm making some design updates to this site over the next few weeks so it may look plain for now... but I'll spiff this place up soon enough!
